It’s been a long week, but a good one; the temperature is finally dropping a little and that’s a relief. It’s been pretty busy around here so today I’m going to share two articles from local news sources that made me smile this week: coincidentally, they’re both farming/produce related.
First off, this Vegetable Jatra that was organized in Tansen, an interesting and historic hilltop city in the west of Nepal that I’ve passed through but alas not explored. The festival, held to promote the area’s local produce and the new wholesale market to sell it in, involved (at least some) people dressing head to toe in vegetables. There’s a surprising amount of creative detail in the costumes—bitter gourd in particular has a starring role as both eyewear and jewelery and it’s good to see it getting its due.
Then there’s this piece about mango farmers in Lohan, eastern Nepal, where efforts are starting to make a difference in the price farmers receive for their products. There’s still a long way to go and I admit I can swing cynical… but I found myself touched as I read.
These posts are quite delightful. Keep em coming :)
